MINNEAPOLIS - It may be hard to choose salad for lunch instead of a burger and fries, but health experts say your body will thank you if you do.

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States, and the second-leading cause of death in Minnesota. According to the American Heart Association of Minnesota, people can improve their cardiovascular health if they'll add more fruits and veggies to their diets.

Heather Hughley, corporate events director for the Heart Association, offered some advice on this National Eating Healthy Day: Put a little color in every meal.

"All that color on your plate is a good thing," she said, "and that's what helps lower things like cholesterol and blood pressure, and really help us to remain healthy."

If there's an option, Hughley said, always choose fresh food over the stuff in cans and packages. She said there's a lot of food that most people assume isn't loaded with preservatives - but it is.

"A lot of meat in the freezer section is preserved with sugar, and that's kind of that icicle fixing you'll see around, like, a chicken breast," she said. "So, if you can choose a fresher option, we definitely advise towards that."

Hughley said today's National Eating Healthy Day is focused on developing good habits. If you eat healthy for one day, she said, you'll know you can do it on other days as well.

While french fries may sound better, Hughley said, vegetables don't have to be boring. The American Heart Association has tips and recipes online at heart.org/eathealthy.
