COLUMBUS, Ohio – One of the most common questions asked amid natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey is, "How can we help?" And dozens of Ohioans are answering that question by packing their bags and heading south.

Jordan Tetting, director of communications and marketing for the Buckeye Region of the Red Cross, says 76 of its volunteers from Ohio are already in Texas and Louisiana to assist in the recovery efforts, and that number is expected to grow. Tetting describes Red Cross volunteers as everyday heroes.

"They are so compassionate and dedicated to making people's lives better," she says. "They leave their friends, their family, they leave their homes for a minimum of two weeks. And they're working really hard, but they're really making a difference."

She says the volunteers are lending a hand in a variety of ways, including working in shelters, providing meals to survivors and assisting with health-care needs. So far nationally, about 2,000 Red Cross volunteers are deployed to the area.

As the remnants of Hurricane Harvey move northeast, the Red Cross and other disaster-relief groups will be watching its progress and reacting accordingly. Tetting says Ohio volunteers will be involved in recovery efforts for the long haul.

"If someone is interested in volunteering, please sign up now on redcross.org and start the application process, start the background check," she adds. "And we can get you into training, so that you may be able to go down there in the weeks or months ahead."

Tetting notes that monetary donations are also needed for disaster relief, and can be made online at redcross.org.
