"There's Someone You've Just Got to Meet"
Monday, December 11, 2006
Cheyenne, WY - You may have voted for them -- but have you ever met them? 'Don't be a stranger' is the message from Wyoming's state legislators as they gear up for the next session. Darci Jones, with the group Wyoming Conservation Voters, says many lawmakers are sponsoring informal, meet-and-greet sessions across the state, and people shouldn't be shy about attending them.
"Their elected officials are approachable, and when they have a concern in the future, they'll be more willing to contact them and discuss that."
Jones believes lawmakers want to stay in touch with their constituents, and find their input valuable because it provides direction.
"We're just providing a venue for people who ordinarily wouldn't be involved in politics to come share a meal with their elected officials and get to know each other."
Jones says lawmakers want to hear from people other than professional lobbyists during the session, and it's hoped the meetings will encourage folks not to hesitate to contact their state Senators and Representatives. There's a meeting tonight in Cheyenne.
