Nuclear Plans Promoted in the Midwest

Columbus, OH - Presidential candidate John McCain is in the Midwest promoting nuclear power as part of the solution for meeting the nation's electricity needs, and the tour is causing static in Ohio. Teresa McHugh with the Sierra Club in Ohio says McCain's plan for 45 new nuclear power plants is missing a few details, like how to safely transport the estimated 6,000 casks of radioactive nuclear waste that would be traveling through Ohio from those plants.

"The security of nuclear fuel and nuclear waste, and whether it can be stored safely, are the issues that have not yet been resolved."

McCain supports the plan to open Yucca Mountain in Nevada to store radioactive waste from nuclear plants, which would bring waste from proposed plants through Ohio, according to the Department of Energy. McHugh points out that Yucca Mountain is not open to accept waste, and there is not yet a timeline indicating when, if ever, it will open up for radioactive waste storage.

McHugh says the other detail missing from the plan to build nuclear power plants is the cost. Companies planning to build nuclear reactors are asking for federal subsidies. She points to investor guru Warren Buffett, who recently walked away from nuclear power projects because of the expense, even with subsidies.

"What we need to be looking at are what are the cleanest, safest and most cost-effective alternatives."
