DENVER - The Denver International Sportsmen's Exposition is billed as the largest exhibit of its kind in the West, drawing thousands to the four-day event. It's a mash-up of outdoor-related businesses and organizations. Colorado angling guides set up booths next to African big-game safari companies. Dogs dive off a man-made dock, while just down the aisle, the National Wildlife Federation drums up support.

At the Kid's Fishing Pond, 4-year-old Ben is practicing his catch-and-release skills. His mom, Heather, says Ben has already been fishing, but she worries whether he'll be able to continue practicing his newfound passion.

"He loves it. It's his new favorite thing. It's not a daily worry or anything, but there is definitely that thought that, you know, our kids might not be able to experience the same things we did."

The Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife sponsored the Kid's Fishing Pond to get children excited about the outdoors - and about preserving Colorado's forests and wildlife habitat. That's also the reason conservation groups - from Ducks Unlimited to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) - participate in the Expo.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation set up an enclosed BB-gun "range" where kids can practice safe hunting skills. Regional Director Allen Kerby says it's important to engage the next generation of sportsmen - and also, women.

"We support the sport and just the love of the land - for our kids, our grandkids, great-grandkids. And we're making sure that all the hard work that we've done over the years continues to carry on, and it doesn't get lost in the future generations."

Kerby says RMEF works with state and federal agencies as well as conservation groups and some private individuals to help protect elk habitat.

"We're out there for conservation. Even as much as we've been losing all the time - it's a big battle for us - we've had a lot of success."

The group has saved more than 600,000 acres of elk habitat nationwide, Kerby says.

More information is available at www.sportsexpos.com. Upcoming expos are scheduled for Sacramento, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Salt Lake City.
