Push for Last-Minute Voter Registration in Iowa

Tuesday, November 3, 2020

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Ahead of this week's election, Iowa's secretary of state announced that a record number of state residents were registered to vote. However, one nonprofit says that's no reason for complacency in trying to get all eligible voters to participate.

This week, the state reported Iowa has more than 2 million active registered voters. And even with Election Day here, groups such as Vote America say people who aren't registered still can cast their ballot. Iowa is 1 of 20 states that offer same-day registration, and Vote America's CEO Debra Cleaver said it's pretty convenient.

"You go to the polling place with your ID, you fill out a voter registration form, and then you get to vote," Cleaver said.

Iowa still is dealing with a surge in coronavirus cases which might deter some people from voting. And the virus has forced the closure of hundreds of polling places throughout the state, creating concerns about longer lines at sites that still are open.

But Cleaver said since many others already have voted absentee, crowding might not be as big of an issue at consolidated locations.

Vote America says more than 13 million unregistered voters live in states where they can sign up to cast their ballot on Election Day. She acknowledges that in states that have voter ID laws, which includes Iowa, same-day registration still might be a problem for marginalized residents.

But she said there's hope that people are overcoming those barriers in 2020, given reports of high participation levels in early voting.

"Voters know that people try to suppress their votes, and they're voting anyway," she said.

In 2017, Iowa adopted its Voter ID law. According to a U.S. Government Accountability Office study, such laws can reduce voter turnout. Supporters of these laws say they protect against fraud.

The ACLU says about 11% of adult Iowans do not have a driver's license. For Black residents, the rate is much higher at 25%.
