PISMO BEACH, Calif. -- Es la Semana de los Polinizadores, un evento anual diseñado para llamar la atención sobre la difícil situación de los polinizadores como las mariposas y las abejas.

Las poblaciones de la mariposa monarca occidental y muchas especies de abejas se han colapsado. Pero Andrea Williams de la Sociedad de Plantas Nativas de California, dice que los jardineros domésticos pueden crear un hábitat maravilloso, si calculan el momento adecuado para el florecimiento.

"Si realmente deseas atraer polinizadores a tu jardín, debes asegurarte de ofrecer suficientes flores durante la temporada de crecimiento para mantenerlos alimentados," asegura Williams.

Plantas que florecen temprano como la Manzanita son polinizadas principalmente por abejorros. El altramuz nativo atraerá a las abejas, y para las floraciones tardías, pruebe el trigo sarraceno y los ásteres.

Williams dice que la Sociedad de Plantas Nativas de California está ofreciendo una nueva herramienta de planificación de jardines llamada Calscape la cual tiene una enorme base de datos para ayudarle a encontrar y elegir las plantas adecuadas para los polinizadores.

"Así puede igualar el tipo de planta, insectos o pájaros que atraerá, y luego combinarlo con las condiciones de su jardín," dice Williams. "También le mostrara que viveros de plantas nativas a su alrededor podrían tener esa planta y conectarle con información adicional."

Agrega que los jardineros locales pueden hacer una gran diferencia, incluso si solo tienen un pequeño espacio, porque varios huertos familiares en un vecindario amigable para los polinizadores, pueden crear corredores de hábitat para sustentar una población más grande de insectos.
