Estadounidenses pierden billones por estafas románticas, impostores y fraude

El año pasado, los estadounidenses informaron haber perdido un récord de $5.8 billones debido a estafas, y ahora, el estado de California y A-A-R-P se están uniendo para tratar de reducir ese número.

Una serie web de cuatro partes sobre la protección contra el fraude al consumidor se estrena hoy al mediodía y se transmitirá todos los miércoles hasta finales del mes.

Sally Westlake trabaja en el Departamento de Protección e Innovación Financiera de California.

"El informe más reciente del FBI indico que el año pasado, más de 3,000 californianos fueron víctimas de estafas románticas en línea, perdiendo un total de casi $184 millones," reporta Westlake. "Los más vulnerables a ser víctimas de estafas románticas son las personas mayores de 60 años."

El primer seminario web "Scam Chat" cubrirá los tipos de fraude más frecuentes en California en este momento. Jackie Wiley, también del Departamento de Protección e Innovación Financiera, dice que las personas deben sospechar cuando una persona llama o envía un correo electrónico alegando que trabaja con una institución financiera, una agencia gubernamental o de aplicación de la ley.

"Podría ser una compañía de servicios públicos que le dice que su factura esta atrasada. Podría ser 'el IRS'. Podría ser alguien diciendo que no cumpliste con tu deber de Jurado," asegura Wiley.

Wiley agrega que siempre es una gran señal de alerta si una persona que llama o envía un correo electrónico solicita un pago mediante criptomoneda o tarjeta de regalo. Usted puede denunciar estafas a la Comisión Federal de Comercio o al Centro de Atención Telefónica del Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.
