Hundreds to Compete at Virginia Senior Games This Weekend

Experts say part of the secret to living a long and healthy life is to keep moving, which is one of the goals at this week's Virginia Senior Games in Lynchburg.

A total of 1,500 athletes, all age 50 and older, will compete in an array of individual and team sports, divided into age groups. Organizers said they had to pause the event for the pandemic in 2020, but it is now back in full swing.

Brian Jacks, associate state director of AARP Virginia, one of the event's sponsors, believes the participants will come away from the event with more than just a trophy.

"We support anything that gets people moving," Jacks explained. "Not just because it helps them maintain physical health, but also packs brain health. A number of studies show that when people are physically active and moving on a regular basis, it increases their mental agility."

The games include 20 events ranging from archery and golf to swimming, running, and cycling. Events are free for spectators, and there will be live music on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights after the events.

Jacks noted AARP has been a Virginia Senior Games sponsor for more than 20 years. He pointed out the event draws hundreds of competitors, not only from Virginia but several other states. He added participants can meet people with similar interests, and it is not unusual to form lifelong friendships.

"Whether it be pickleball or volleyball or softball, all of which are components of the Virginia Senior Games, we find that the social aspect of being involved in sports plays into an individual's ability to age in a healthy way," Jacks emphasized.

The games are scheduled through Saturday at more than a dozen venues around the Lynchburg area.
