Estudiantes minoritarios de NMSU reciben impulso hacia carreras agrícolas

La Universidad Estatal de Nuevo México y la Universidad Estatal de California-Chico están reclutando estudiantes de grupos subrepresentados para un a nuevo programa destinado a ayudarles a incorporarse a la fuerza laboral de ciencias alimentarias y agrícolas del país.

El programa conjunto capacitará a más estudiantes de grupos minoritarios para carreras agrícolas competitivas.

La directora del programa y profesora de Ciencia Animal de la NMSU, Jennifer Hernández Gifford, afirma que entre el 40% y el 50% de los estudiantes universitarios de ciencias animales de ambas universidades son de ascendencia hispana, pero que esta cifra se reduce al 13% en el nivel de posgrado.

"Eso no está en consonancia con nuestra capacidad de llevar a esos estudiantes a los puestos de liderazgo que requieren un título secundario," dice Hernández Gifford. "Por eso nos centramos en ese grupo, para reforzarlo."

El programa está financiado por un subsidio de casi $1 millón de dólares del Instituto Nacional de Alimentación y Agricultura de la USDA.

En 2022, el instituto anunció una asignación total de $14 millones de dólares a instituciones hispanas para apoyar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes en los sectores de agricultura y ciencias humanas.

Hernández Gifford dice que muchos estudiantes universitarios hispanos e indígenas son estudiantes de primera generación que se enfrentan a graves dificultades financieras si tienen que mantenerse a sí mismos o a sus familias, lo que hace que el dinero del subsidio sea fundamental para muchos.

"Eso significa que no trabajan en Walmart hasta medianoche y luego intentan ir a la escuela por la mañana," reconoce Hernández Gifford. "Así que no solo decimos: "Aquí tienes una beca para ir a clase". Decimos: "Te voy a dar un estipendio". Entonces, este programa tiene mucho que ver con crear comunidad."

Ella dice que la colaboración entre universidades dará a más estudiantes la oportunidad de enfocarse en una carrera agrícola, porque Chico State tiene un sólido programa de pregrado en ciencia animal, pero carece de un programa de posgrado, mientras que New Mexico State tiene ambos.

El programa, que se extenderá hasta 2026, cuenta actualmente con tres estudiantes graduados en NMSU.
