SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California enfrenta una enorme escasez de viviendas accesibles y un grupo que aboga por los residentes mayores está buscando soluciones.

Esta semana, AARP California ha publicado un nuevo informe sobre la necesidad de vivienda. Este es el resultado de meses dedicados a convocar a expertos y partes interesadas para abordar el problema de la accesibilidad.

El director estatal asociado de AARP California, Rafi Nazarians, dice que el estado puede reforzar el apoyo a la vivienda accesible revitalizando el pacto social entre generaciones.

"Se refiere a un acuerdo implicito entre generaciones, para compartir recursos y apoyarse mutuamente en todas las fases de la vida."

El informe encontró que existe una fuerte percepción de que los adultos mayores tienden a oponerse a los proyectos de vivienda accesible en sus áreas cuando solicitan aprobación local.

AARP quiere replantear el tema, y espera que aumente el apoyo entre sus millones de miembros para proyectos que permitan que todos prosperen dentro de la comunidad.

Nazarians dice que la investigación muestra que la burocracia es otro gran obstáculo para que se aprueben y se construyan nuevas viviendas, porque puede llevar años cumplir con un enredo de regulaciones ambientales, uso de tierra y zonificación.

"El area de consenso mas grande fue el de la necesidad de un proceso mucho mas simplificado, en todos los niveles de gobierno y en todas las coyunturas de desarrollo de viviendas accesibles en California."

Es probable que aumente la demanda de viviendas accesibles diseñadas específicamente para adultos mayores. Las estadísticas muestran que para 2030, uno de cada tres californianos tendrá más de 50 años y el 17% tendrá más de 65 años.
