RENO, Nev. -- La línea de tránsito del Condado de Washoe se está volviendo más ecológica este mes, con 17 nuevos autobuses híbridos eléctricos-biodiesel y dos autobuses eléctricos. Las adiciones brindan a la línea de autobuses de la Comisión Regional de Transporte, combustible alternativo híbrido o eléctrico en un 80%.

El gerente de flotas e instalaciones, David Carr, dice que el objetivo es que todos los autobuses RTC funcionen con energía alternativa para el 2035.

"Estan limpios, son nuevos, les da a los pasajeros, creo, una mejor calidad de transporte y no estan expuestos a los mismos contaminantes que estarian en un autobus diesel normal."

Carr dice que alejarse del diésel es rentable además de tener un impacto positivo en el medio ambiente. Los autobuses eléctricos no tienen emisiones de escape y los híbridos tienen un 60% más de ahorro en combustible.

Dana Lowell es consultor medioambiental de M.J. Bradley y Asociados. Él dice que los vehículos eléctricos benefician a todos: ahorran dinero en gasolina, remuneración para el consumidor, reducen las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y son buenos para todos los que usan electricidad en Nevada.

"Esto es parte de la importante oportunidad de los vehiculos electricos, es mejor utilizar la infraestructura de red ya existente, y por lo tanto, reducir los costos para todo el uso electrico, y no solo de los vehiculos electricos."

Él señala que los fabricantes de automóviles tradicionales están comenzando a adoptar la electrificación; por ejemplo, General Motors usó su comercial del Super Tazón para destacar sus nuevos autos eléctricos.

Pero Lowell señala que muchos coches eléctricos en el mercado todavía son demasiado caros y la infraestructura de carga es limitada. Él dice que hay soluciones políticas que van desde créditos fiscales para los consumidores hasta inversiones en estaciones de carga. Y dice que vale la pena, ya que la red eléctrica de Nevada también avanza hacia una energía más renovable.

"Un vehiculo electrico es posiblemente el unico vehiculo que usted pueda comprar que se vuelva mas limpio durante su vida."

Lowell dice que a pesar de que partes del país todavía queman cantidades significativas de carbón, a medida que se recurre a las energías renovables, los beneficios de los vehículos eléctricos solo aumentarán.
