AARP Poll Reveals NH Voter Mindset Ahead of Midterms

With just a couple weeks before the midterm elections, a new study delves into the mindset of Granite State voters.

The new polling, for AARP New Hampshire, found the top issues vary, mostly along party lines. Abortion rights are important to Democrats, while Republicans are concerned with inflation and rising prices.

Bob Ward, partner at the research firm Fabrizio Ward, noted something caught his eye in the New Hampshire data. The poll found most voters favor Republican Gov. Chris Sununu in the gubernatorial race, and they would vote for Democrat Maggie Hassan for U.S. Senate. Ward said, despite the country's polarization, "ticket splitting" is alive and well in New Hampshire.

"We talk about partisan politics and the polarization of the electorate, candidates matter," Ward asserted. "I think what we're seeing here in New Hampshire is that voters are discerning that, yes, party is certainly extremely the most determinative attribute in how you're going to vote. But in this case, they're looking at candidates and making different opinions."

He added it has not been the case in other states where similar polling was done. In Florida, most voters are split along party lines, with those ages 18-49 more likely to vote for Democrats, and people 50 and older likely to vote for Republicans.

The poll found the top-of-mind issues for New Hampshire voters remain the same in both parties. They are abortion rights, inflation and the economy, and voting rights.

Matt Hogan, partner at Impact Research, said voters 50 and older were asked whether the economy or abortion was their higher priority.

"What we see, as in every other state we polled in, the economy and inflation is the higher priority by an 11-point margin," Hogan reported. "The gap here is the narrowest we've seen in any state, I think underscoring the importance of abortion to New Hampshire voters."

Other issues of importance included the future of Social Security and Medicare, immigration, the environment and taxes. With Election Day less than a month away, voters will make their opinions known in the voting booth.
