A Connecticut group submitted a resolution to Hartford's City Council seeking to create more health equity at the city's hospitals and clinics. Make the Road Connecticut's resolution asks the council to work with community health providers to guide them on how to supply better services for the city's immigrant community. In Connecticut, 22-percent of residents age five and older speak a language other than English, according to U-S Census data.

Brigith Rivera, community organizer with Make the Road Connecticut, said the group has specific some goals for this resolution.

"It's a vision to ensure health-care services are of quality and accessible," she said. "It's definitely just a start of ongoing conversations that we wish to have. And, it really should signify to hospitals and clinics that this really does matter to the people of Hartford."

Presenting this resolution is just one of several other health-related initiatives that have been going on in the state. Earlier this year, the HUSKY for Immigrants Coalition introduced legislation to expand the state's Medicaid program to undocumented people up to age 26. However, the General Assembly only expanded access to undocumented children up to age 15 during the state's budget negotiations.

The resolution is one part of Make the Road Connecticut's Access to Health Without Barriers Campaign. Additionally, the campaign seeks to increase health care services, and improve complex and inaccessible financial assistance programs. Since the campaign began, there have been some challenges along the way, Rivera said.

"One of the first challenges in working with the community, right, there's a fear that, 'Oh, if I stand up, that hospital could not serve me somehow,' " Rivera said.

Another challenge is that there is no governing body to tell hospitals how to do better for the immigrant community, since they are more self-governing. In the future, Rivera said the group is working to create individual plans for hospitals and clinics on how to implement this resolution.
