Colorado's sportsmen have their eye on a new target -- national energy policy. Hunters and anglers from the Rocky Mountain West are in Washington, D.C., this week to ask lawmakers to adopt an energy development policy that also protects fish, wildlife and water resources. Representing Colorado is Ken Neubecker with Colorado Trout Unlimited. He says exemptions from the Clean Water Act for the oil and gas industry are harming the state's streams and rivers.

“I've seen a lot of well sites and pipeline corridors being constructed without any regard to run-off or sediment discharge getting into streams that are prime trout habitat. It can literally kill the streams, literally smother them.”

Neubecker notes that the group understands the economic importance of energy development in Colorado, but there should be more consideration given to wildlife on the part of the BLM.

“At this point, it’s pretty much making oil and gas development its number one priority, and the streams and the wildlife and habitat are tending to suffer because of it. And the oil and gas industry has become arguably the largest land developer in the West. They should be complying with these regulations as well.”

The group is supporting a number of measures in the "Energy Policy Reform and Revitalization Act," recently introduced by Rep. Nick Rahall (D) of West Virginia.
