New Fuel Standards Could Save Nevadans at the Pump

Las Vegas, NV - With gas prices hovering at three dollars a gallon, Congress this week will consider a measure that would increase vehicle mileage standards to 35 mile per gallon by the year 2020. Nevada Sen. Harry Reid came out in strong support of the plan yesterday, and that has conservationists like Dan Geary, a Nevada representative for the National Environmental Trust, optimistic that something may finally be done after decades of inaction.

“Sen. Reid's leadership is absolutely critical. We need a 10 mile per gallon increase over the next 10 years with no loopholes.”

Right now light trucks and SUV's aren't subject to the regular efficiency standards. This measure would end that practice. Opponents say it would be difficult for the auto industry to meet the new standards, but Geary says they made the same claims about other innovations like seatbelts, and the industry was able to adapt.

President Bush is pushing for a plan that would require only a modest increase in fuel efficiency standards, but after decades of doing nothing, Geary believes we need to boost the requirements quickly.

In 2006, Nevadans sent $1.6 billion overseas for oil imports, according to the Department of Energy. Geary says that means thousands of dollars per minute go over seas for foreign oil.

“Nevadans spend about $3,044 per minute overseas for foreign oil, so increasing our auto efficiency standards, is not only a good move for consumers and a good move for the environment, it's also a good move to increase out national security.”
