Nearly 45 million Americans are uninsured, with almost 52,000 in North Dakota, and a growing number are turning to the state's Community Health Care Centers for the treatment they need. A new study by the National Association of Community Health Centers finds health centers in North Dakota and around the nation are filling a critical need in the health care system, especially as the health care crisis expands, leaving more without coverage. Karen Larson with the Community Health Care Association of the Dakotas says the centers have helped many under-insured and uninsured North Dakotans get affordable care.

"The last measurement we have was in 2006 and I believe we had a total of 21,640 patients that were seen."

Larson adds that the centers in this state have experienced a substantial increase in services for the neediest communities over the last dozen years, thanks to federal funding.

"We were very fortunate a few years ago that there were some additional monies available to get some new sites in the more rural areas. What it has shown up is that we still have some underserved areas."

Larson feels that another reason the role of the Community Health Centers is growing is that the U.S. health care crisis now includes many middle class Americans, not just the jobless and low-income.
