Minnesota Focus of Farm Bill Campaign

Minneapolis, MN – With its strong influence on agricultural policy in Congress, Minnesota has become "ground zero" in the debate over the next U.S. Farm Bill. A coalition of taxpayer, environmental and faith groups has launched a television ad campaign that calls on lawmakers to stop subsidizing corporate farms, and invest in family farming operations and rural communities. Adam Warthesen, spokesman for the Land Stewardship Project, says the Farm Bill should be restructured, and that current farm policy has the wrong priorities.

"The current system is broken and it's in the need of reform. Current policies have contributed to increased land consolidation, and deterioration of our water and our soil."

Warthesen explains smaller farm operations have greater awareness of the need to balance profits with protecting the land. He believes it's better public policy to encourage farmers to promote conservation, but that many conservation programs have been short-changed, which hurts farmers as well as the environment.

"We have a flawed and broken title that is pushing farmers to grow more corn and beans on fragile soils. It has propped up a structure that makes farmers work harder, for less. We need to shift dollars from the commodity programs into rural development and conservation, to create more balance and more options for farmers. When farmers want to access conservation programs for working lands, the money just hasn't been there. It's been raided for other programs. Being able to shift dollars back into conservation really makes sense. The net benefit to the public -- from clean water, an increase in water life habitat, and decreased erosion -- is priceless."

The House has already passed its version of the new Farm Bill. The Senate is expected to take action this month.
Coalition members include the Land Stewardship Project, Oxfam America, Taxpayers for Common Sense, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and the National Catholic Rural Life Conference.
