Boston, MA - One in four Massachusetts kindergarten students already has tooth decay, and more than half aren't getting treatment. According to a new report from the Catalyst Institute, dental decay is the most common childhood infectious disease, although it is entirely preventable.

Representative John Scibak is House chair of the Oral Health Caucus, and he's being honored as an "Oral Health Hero" at the Statehouse today. Scibak says he's heard testimony of people who didn't get dental treatment and ended up in the intensive care unit.

"Children are going down a road that is relatively easy to prevent and easy to treat. We know that untreated dental decay at this age is going to probably exacerbate and result in more serious problems as they get older."

Dr. Frank Robinson, vice chair of the statewide Oral Health Task Force, is involved with an oral health program known as "BEST" in Hampden County. He says it teaches preschool children about taking care of their teeth, and he hopes to see the program expanded to cover kids throughout the state.

"We have one more year of this demonstration, just to take our lessons learned and deliver them and disseminate them in a manner that allows other local communities and counties to adopt the same program."

The Catalyst Institute report notes that tooth decay often means pain and infection, which can lead to larger health problems as well as being distracting during the school day. Scibak says the issue for most people is access to care, and fixing the problem starts by making it easier for children to get to the dentist, no matter what type of insurance coverage they have.
