MI Foster Kids Learn About “Aging Gracefully”

Southfield, MI – Hundreds of Michigan teens find themselves suddenly on their own each year when they "age out" of the foster care system. To ease a transition that can be difficult, Lutheran Social Services of Michigan has worked with the state to develop a program to teach teens about personal finance, getting and keeping a job, and even how to clean their place. Getting these life skills under their belts is a whole new way of thinking for many of these teens, according to Emily DeMeester with Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. She says many of their biological families have trouble with money or have abuse problems.

"It's hard to get them to see something different, or to want something different for themselves. Money management is the hardest thing in the world."

DeMeester says her organization gives older teens a monthly stipend to live with a host family or, in some cases, to live independently in an apartment. Then they attend classes on getting and keeping a job, personal relationships, household cleaning and other life skills.

A recent court-ordered analysis of Michigan's foster care system shows serious problems in providing these young people with a stable foster home. To help maintain stability, DeMeester says Lutheran Social Services' supervised independent living program also strives to hook teens up with a long-term mentor.

"The goal is to have somebody who's solid in the youth's life from now on out, so that as an adult he or she has someone to go to."
