Nevada Kids Underinsured Despite Congressional Advances in Childcare

Carson City, NV - A new study from the Children's Defense Fund Action Council concludes that despite setbacks on extending children's health insurance, S-CHIP, Congress did more for kids in 2007 than in past years, with improvements in the minimum wage and Head Start program.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid received a 100 percent approval rating in the survey, which ranks each member of Congress on votes on key children's issues, but there's more to be done for kids in his state.

Nancy Whitman with the Nevada Health Care Reform Project says the state has yet to fully implement health care services available to Nevada kids.

"Nevada is the fifth-highest state in the number of uninsured children in the whole nation, and that has not improved over time. We have over 106,000 children, and about 90 percent of those could qualify for S-CHIP or Nevada Medicaid in our state."

Whitman says the state congressional delegation could take more pro-active steps to ensure a unified voting bloc for children's health in Congress.

According to Whitman, there have been some improvements from Congress on the state of children's health and well-being in Nevada.

"The improvement made in Head Start is a very positive step. Increasing the minimum wage helps assist families in getting some kind of health care coverage or qualification for an S-CHIP program. And so, those are all positive things that have happened in the past."

Ed Shelleby with the CDF Action Council says there's still a lot of work to be done.

"This is the richest nation in the world, and there are 9.4 million children without health coverage, 13 million of them live in poverty, 5.5 million children live in extreme poverty."

The report is at www.cdfactioncouncil.org.
