Los Angeles, CA - Too many Californians are avoiding the dentist, and that may be making them sick in other ways. But an effort is now underway to see that more people receive the dental care they need. Dr. Elaine Batchlor with L.A. Care Health Plan says most people don’t realize the consequences of not taking care of their teeth.

"Poor oral health can lead to a number of systemic problems including heart disease, diabetes and lung disease, so untreated dental disease is a real medical problem."

According to the Centers for Disease Control, oral diseases are the most common and untreated health problem among children, especially in California. To help the uninsured and low-income families, L.A. Care is teaming up with community clinics in the Los Angeles area to provide free and low-cost dental services. L.A. Care's Oral Health Initiative has provided more than $6 million in grants. Batchlor says the community clinics will provide much-needed services.

"Significantly more people have medical insurance than have dental coverage. Three times as many people lack dental insurance and people who are low-income and who don’t have insurance have a very difficult time accessing dental services."

A list of the clinics offering services can be found online at www.lacare.org.

Information regarding low-income dental clinics in other parts of the state is available at www.cda.org.
