Bush CO2 Proposal: For Virginia, Nice But Not Enough

Charlottesville, VA - Environmental experts in Virginia are welcoming President Bush's new position on global warming gases, but they wish it went further. On Wednesday, Bush proposed halting the increase in greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2025. That's a change from prior policy, but well short of tougher measures that some scientists say are needed to put the brakes on climate change. Angela Anderson is with the D.C.-based Pew Environment Group.

"The President's proposal was a little disappointing, but even as such it shows just how far the debate has shifted in the United States. Seven years ago, President Bush questioned whether pollution was even contributing to global warming, and today he acknowledged that a major change in our energy infrastructure has got to begin."

In Charlottesville, J.R. Tolbert with Environment America says it's time for action to combat the climate changes that Virginians are already seeing.

"Virginia needs real action that reaches the magnitude of the problem. We in Virginia over the last several years have been dealing with increased instances of drought, and we also run the risk of losing so much of our coastal beaches from rising sea levels."

President Bush's proposal came on eve of today's third meeting of his Major Economies initiative in Paris. The Pew representative at the talks says the biggest barrier to success at that meeting remains the U.S. administration's refusal to join the rest of the industrialized world in cutting emissions soon. Opponents say making faster cuts would harm businesses and the economy.
