Oregon’s Special Delivery: 2 Million Pounds of Food

Portland, OR – Letter carriers, in Oregon and across the country, will make some of their most important deliveries this week. On Saturday, the national Letter Carriers' Food Drive takes place, and all you have to do to participate is set out a bag of canned goods at your front door. The same day your carrier picks it up, the food is sorted and delivered to local food banks.

L.C. Hanson, Portland, says she and her fellow Postal Service employees plan for this day, and get plenty of volunteer help to tote those bags.

"Sometimes, people have the misconception that by doing this, they're gonna overload their friendly letter carrier. But in fact, it's one of the coolest days of the year for us, and we feel really great about it. So they should really load us up!"

The letter carriers' goal in Oregon this year is 2 million pounds of food in one day. Last year's drive raised 1.6 million pounds, but this year the Oregon Food Bank reports the need has grown in most communities, and donations are down. Food bank locations serve almost 200,000 Oregonians per month, including 72,000 children.

Not sure what to donate? Amber Stinson of the OFB has lots of ideas.

"Tuna fish, chicken, salmon: High-protein foods are really important for nutrition. Canned and boxed meals, like soups, stews, chilis, macaroni and cheese; vegetables and fruits are also important. The only things we really can't use are homemade foods, perishable foods and also glass can be a little bit difficult to handle."
