Hug a Caregiver: WA “Child Care Appreciation Day”

Seattle, WA – Busy parents are grateful every day for good child care, and this Friday is a day set aside to act on that gratitude. On this "Child Care Appreciation Day," there are 17 percent fewer licensed child care providers in Washington than there were five years ago, and those there are care for about 175,000 children.

Grace Alams, a board member at Child Care Resources, has been a provider in Seattle for 12 years. She says that for caregivers, the "thanks" that mean the most are not big-budget items.

"I have received some flowers, plants that the kids have planted themselves, at home with their parents; a little thank-you card, some homemade cookies from the kids and their parents. Sometimes, I've had kids have their parents buy me a cup of latte in the morning. I think that was so cute!"

Alams says good caregivers are in the business because they love it, and they really become part of a child's family. She still receives letters from families whose children are grown, which she says also mean a lot. The state only tracks numbers of children in licensed facilities; thousands more are cared for by relatives and neighbors.

You can go online to www.childcarenet.org and nominate your children's caregiver for special thanks from the state Childcare Resource and Referral Network, but Alams says any day is a good day to let caregivers know they're appreciated.

"On a daily basis, parents, when they pick up their kids, most of them will say something. 'Thank you for helping him complete the work,' 'Thank you for teaching him how to tie his shoes,' and et cetera. Just a little commendation really, really helps a lot."
