Tragic Numbers: Child Gun Deaths Up Nationally and in South Dakota

Washington, D.C. – More than 3,000 children and teens nationwide died from firearms in 2005, marking the first increase since 1994. That's the focus of a new report today from the Children's Defense Fund that looks at data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In South Dakota, the child gun death rates have also been increasing, and seven of the 11 deaths reported in 2005 were attributed to suicide. Susan Gates with the CDF says the numbers mean it's time to work on solutions.

"It's time that we step up and take action to stop the thousands of senseless firearms deaths of children and teens. The problem is solvable."

Gun rights groups oppose new gun laws, claiming they violate the Second Amendment right to bear arms. But Gates says that when what he calls common-sense gun laws are in effect, deaths and accidents among children and teens go down dramatically.

Ladd Everitt with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence believes guns should stay out of the hands of South Dakota children. He adds there could be laws requiring safety features that still preserve gun rights for adults.

"There is a lot of room for improvement in terms of the way we manufacture guns in order to make them tamper-resistant to children."

The new statistics, and the recent Supreme Court case revisiting the Washington, D.C. ban on handguns, have put the issue of gun ownership squarely in the spotlight in recent months.
