Firearms Safety Summer Campaign Underway Today

St. Paul, MN - A summer-long drive to focus on firearm safety gets underway today. Project Minnesota spokeswoman Sue Fust says the campaign promotes safe firearm storage, as well as the need for background checks for gun purchases and a crackdown on illegal trafficking of weapons.

"We need to keep guns out of the hands of children, because they're not responsible enough nor old enough to be able to understand the consequences of some of their actions - and we also need to keep them out of the hands of criminals."

Fust, executive director of Citizens for a Safer Minnesota, says children need special protection as our most vulnerable group.

"Children are susceptible, not just because they're victims of gun violence. Sometimes they're perpetrators of gun violence, which is a reflection on our society. They are also victims when it comes to knowing that their loved adults have been victimized by gun violence. So, it's very important - for parents, for spiritual leaders, and society - to understand that this is an extremely important issue, and we need to keep it in the spotlight."

The campaign coincides with a Children's Defense Fund (CDF) study that finds the rate of gun deaths among children and teens is increasing for the first time since 1994. Minnesota CDF spokesman Marc Kimball calls the numbers alarming and unacceptable.

"There were 3,006 children across the country, 42 of them right here in Minnesota, that died in a variety of ways - homicides, suicides, accidents. Some of the states had hundreds and, while we don't rise to that level of problem, even one death is too many."

Kimball believes one reason for lower numbers in Minnesota is the state's long history and tradition of gun training and safety. He adds the campaign is a joint effort of both gun owners and non-gun owners. The CDF report is available online at www.childrensdefesefund.org.
