Thursday, August 7, 2008

Des Moines, IA – On opening day of the Iowa State Fair, fairgoers will see John McCain and Barack Obama everywhere they turn - literally.

There seems to be a poll almost daily to show the standings in this year's presidential race, but the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council is planning a distinctive poll of its own. As Council spokesman Rik Shannon explains, fairgoers can put the face of "their" candidate on display.

"We got 'face fans' with each of the presidential candidates, Senator Obama and Senator McCain, and we'll be handing those out to fairgoers, conducting an informal poll."

The fans will be available at the "ID Action" booth on the Grand Concourse, along with information on both candidates' positions about key issues related to disabilities. For many Iowans with disabilities, Shannon notes, the top issue is the same as for most voters.

"They're very concerned about the economy, particularly the impact that the downturn in the economy is having on their access to needed services and support."

In addition to the "just-for-fun" poll using the candidates' faces, Shannon says, they'll be demonstrating how to use the voting machines that are compliant with the "Help America Vote Act." There will also be a special appearance by Miss Iowa, Abbey Curran, who is an advocate for disabilities issues.

A program of the the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council, ID Action was created to increase political and civic participation of Iowans with disabilities.
