Great Lakes Compact "Sails" Through Congress

Madison, WI - After many years in the making, the Great Lakes Compact is finally on its way to the President's desk. The historic agreement is a collaboration by eight states, including Wisconsin, and two Canadian provinces to prevent diversion of Great Lakes water outside of the Great Lakes region.

Congress ratified the Compact on Tuesday. Aside from preventing diversion of Great Lakes water, it establishes standards for water conservation and monitoring. Melissa Malott, water program director with Clean Wisconsin, believes one of the most important aspects of the plan is, it ensures that Great Lakes memories won't become extinct with the current generation.

"Their children and their children's children are, into the future, going to have the Great Lakes there to spend time on; that, I think, is the most valuable part of the Great Lakes Compact."

The U.S. House passed the Compact Tuesday with an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 390-25, after the Senate had approved the measure August 1. Now that the Compact has been approved, Malott says, the focus for the Lakes will be restoration and addressing other threats, such as pollution and invasive species.

"We're going to be talking about that over the next year, the next steps for cleaning up the Great Lakes, now that we know they'll be here into the future."

President Bush pledged his support for the Compact in a statement issued in July, and is expected to sign it in the near future.
