Idahoans Protest Wall Street Bailout Plan

Boise, ID – Idahoans are among those joining a protest today to say throwing money at the problem won't fix it. It's a national day of protest over the administration's $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan.

Chuck Vogel with United Action for Idaho says strings need to be attached to any taxpayer money going to for-profit big businesses, and there's no reason to rush a bailout package through before the Congressional recess.

"Why does it have to be immediate? Cool their heels a little bit - I mean, what the hell if they don't get to take a recess Friday?"

President Bush says the package needs to be passed quickly to fend off a recession.

Vogel says the protesters are also calling for another economic stimulus package for working families and homeowner assistance so more people don't lose their homes. Some members of Congress have agreed that mortgage assistance should be part of the proposal, although it's not included in the plan from President Bush.

Danny Schechter is an Emmy Award-winning television producer who predicted the financial meltdown in several documentaries. He says it's important to remember that, just as in the case of Enron and other company failures, there is fraud going on that needs to be he halted.

"We need a 'jailout' more than a bailout – hold these people accountable for what they did. At the same time, we have to restructure the system so that we don't see it again."
