Missoula, MT – Montana's Republican Party has withdrawn its challenge of 6,000 registered voters, and now voter advocates are asking what this means for those on that list. Jason Kiely with the Montana Conservation Voters says his group is challenging the Secretary of State to take immediate action to clear up voter confusion, and to provide written guidance to county election offices to help halt unfounded challenges.

"We're asking the Secretary to require full evidence for any future challenges, because the burden of proof is on the challenger, not the voter, as it was earlier misconstrued in this process."

Quick action is important to correct this kind of voter suppression, says Kiely, and to restore integrity to the voting process.

"They caused a lot of confusion, and they should be held accountable for this."

Montana Conservation Voters wants Montana voters who received an affidavit challenging their registration to be sent letters that provide accurate information about their voting rights. Kiely believes the letter should also encourage them to vote as they normally would. Those targeted on the challenge list included a soldier in Iraq who had forwarded his mail to his parents' address, and others who had changed their addresses. One Republican party spokesperson said the challenge was the result of concern about voter fraud.
