Concord, NH – Rumors are swirling that the economic crisis is going to put a damper on President-elect Barack Obama's plans to invest in renewable energy. Others say the economic crisis has "perfect timing" for full-speed ahead on green energy production, infrastructure and climate change pollution control.

Twenty-nine conservation groups, including those with a presence in New Hampshire, are chiming in on the argument of "perfect timing."

National Wildlife Federation President Larry Schweiger says focusing on pushing the green economy forward is at the top of his list. He calls it the "economic rescue the country is waiting for."

"I believe what we need now is to dig our way out of the financial hole we're in with a green shovel, by investing in emission reductions and adaptation for the changing climate."

Schweiger says a wider view is also needed for the economic picture. He notes that keeping land and water clean brings solid economic benefits, with the outdoor recreation industry related to those resources generating $730 billion a year, and supporting one in every 20 jobs.

"The engines that drive our economy are not only in Detroit; they are all over this nation, in and around our national parks, our great waters, and all the treasured landscapes Americans have spent decades conserving."

Other groups supporting "green investments" as an economic recovery vehicle include Pew Environment Group and the Natural Resources Defense Council. They’ve sent a list of "green" priorities to President-elect Obama’s transition team.
