An "Attitude Of Gratitude" Could Be The Best Gift For Kids

Kansas City, MO - The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is here! But sprinkle in day-to-day life and a dash of bad economy -- and out of the oven pops a family that could be overbaked.

Psychologists say an "attitude of gratitude" may be just the right medicine for what ails a stressed-out family. Parents can start, says Dr. Dave Bennett of Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, by showing thanks to their children, a step which builds kids' self-esteem.

"You're really noticing things they do that you appreciate about them. A lot of times, we think it but we don't say it. It can be a very simple thing, like, 'Thanks for coming to dinner the first time I asked you.'"

He cautions parents, however, not to sour the sweetness of a compliment in the next breath.

"If you're saying, 'Thank you for playing nicely with your sister tonight,' you want to stop there. Don't go, 'But what happened last night? You two were at each others throats!' You don't want to go that extra step and undo the compliment."

He also warns that kids mirror their parents' stresses, so one of the best gifts adults can give children is to just keep their cool when things are hectic. Holidays can be a difficult time for everyone, especially on a tight budget, so seek out ways to say and give thanks that don't cost a dime.

"Baking cookies, volunteering together, helping others, giving in other ways can I think be very good important ways for families to kind of regroup."

It's very difficult to be depressed when you feel appreciated, Bennett explains. In his view, expressing thanks should be an everyday occurrence, not just for Thanksgiving, because the "attitude of gratitude" is contagious. It can improve your own outlook as well as those around you.
