A Gift of Two Million for Iowans, and Everyone
Thursday, January 15, 2009
Washington D.C. – The U.S. Senate today is set to vote on a bundle of public land and water bills that would declare two million acres as "wilderness" across the country. Mike Matz with the Campaign for America's Wilderness says it's a bonanza for vacationers and sportsmen.
"Two million acres is nothing to sneeze at in this day and age. Setting aside for future generations is just absolutely the right thing to do."
Matz says while the package of bills doesn't include wilderness in Iowa, it still benefits Iowans.
"It's nice to know for folks to know that these places are out there. That they can go on vacation from Iowa to California, or Idaho, or Colorado, and visit these places and get out, and hike, and hunt, and fish, and just enjoy time with family camping."
The package of bills stalled in Congress last year, with opponents concerned about calling limits on timber harvest and resource development.
