Michigan, sede de la primera conferencia internacional sobre autismo

Novi, Michigan, es la ciudad sede en la que se celebra la primera conferencia internacional sobre autismo, un mal que muchos consideran epidémico, aunque todavía no hay un consenso claro sobre si la cantidad de casos va en aumento o no. Entre las 200 personas registradas para asistir a este ciclo de conferencias se encuentra la sicóloga Jaime McGillivary, del hospital Royal Oak Beaumont.

La frecuencia de casos con autismo es notablemente alta, un diagnóstico por cada 150 niños, y la sicóloga McGillivary dice que la discusión sobre las causas de que la tasa de enfermedad sea tan elevada, todavía está vigente.

"Algunos piensan que es un aumento en la frecuencia con la que se está diagnosticando, pero otros buscan la causa en variables ambientales.”

McGillivary afirma que los padres deben comportarse como si fueran científicos cuando se trata de investigar cualquier recurso a su alcance para dar con lo que mejor se ajuste al niño y a la familia. Muchos de esos tratamientos incluso los enfoques alternativos, se discutirán en la conferencia.

"Ya sea con la dieta o las cámaras hiperbáricas de oxígeno, hay que procurar que la atención del niño aumente, o su habilidad para aprender.”

El evento, llamado “Primera Conferencia Internacional sobre los Desórdenes del Espectro del Autismo”, comienza hoy en Novi y se prolongará hasta el próximo domingo.
