COLUMBUS, Ohio - Kids aren't the only Ohioans going back to school this fall. Motorists of all ages are learning how to stay safe behind the wheel in a new refresher course. Offered by AARP Ohio, the four-hour Driver Safety Course is a condensed version of an eight-hour class that has been around for 30 years.

Volunteer leader Ken Kilby says this is the perfect time of year for drivers to take time to refocus on safety.

"With children returning to school, this is a good time for everyone - moms, dads, grandmas - to come back into the classroom and learn something they maybe had forgotten about and to find out what is actually going on in regard to driver safety."

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, more than 1,800 crashes on Ohio roadways last year involved school buses, including 10 fatalities. Kilby says during the class, trained volunteers teach drivers to be more cognizant of what's going on around them. They also get an update on changes in state law.

"Classes cover the proper use of side-view mirrors, rear-view mirrors and wearing seatbelts; we also emphasize what should be a lack thereof: cell phones, and particularly texting while you are driving."

The course also offers tips on how to reduce traffic violations and accidents, and ways to develop safe driving strategies to compensate for age-related changes. Kilby says some insurance companies even offer a discount to those who pass the course.

Information on local courses can be found at www.aarp.org/drive.
