Bangor, ME - As Americans gear up to celebrate Labor Day weekend, volunteers in Maine will be planning for a day of service and remembrance on September 11. Gov. Baldacci will join various community groups and members for a renewal project at a transitional housing area in Bangor.

Rochelle Runge, public relations representative for the Maine Commission for Community Service, and volunteer leader, says the day's work will be aimed at beautifying the park for local residents.

"They really don't have a nice area for families and children to play, so we'll be planting perennials, making picnic areas, clearing brush, labeling plant species."

The housing facility and area provide a safe haven for people and families who were homeless, or on the verge of homelessness. Runge says that the 9/11 project, which is part of a broader summer community service initiative called United We Serve, has several goals, and this park project encompasses two of them.

"One is environment and other is community renewal, so our project will be focusing on those two areas."

Community volunteer Meredith Eaton says it will be rewarding to be of service on September 11, by helping community members and by honoring those who died on that tragic day eight years ago. It is also her hope that the 9/11 project, which is part of a larger initiative called United We Serve, will inspire more Maine residents to volunteer throughout the year.

"United We Serve is a sweeping call to action. It's based on the simple, but profound idea that every one of us has the power to make a difference, and that all of us should try."

Volunteers will meet at the Park Wood Transitional Housing area at 1201 Union Street in Bangor on September 11 from 2:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Information about United We Serve is at www.serve.gov. Other 9/11 events will take place in Portland, Saco and Augusta.

In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which officially recognized September 11 as a national day of service and remembrance. For other local events and volunteer information, visit http://www.volunteermaine.org">www.volunteermaine.org.
