NEW YORK - Baby boomers, Generation X, and now Generation E, where the "E" ties into ecology, clean-energy economics and social equity. It's the term used in a new National Wildlife Federation (NWF) report to describe the leaders of the sustainability movement on college campuses, including one in Buffalo.

Chris Devlin is a recent graduate of Medaille College in Buffalo, who helped organize the school's first Annual Leadership and Recycling Symposium in 2008. Devlin says the college brought students together from across the state to compare notes on their campus sustainability projects.

"We did the paper reduction. Another school did energy-efficient soda machines. One school tried to get a can and bottle return on the campus, aimed at making the school more green-friendly."

The NWF report documented thousands of projects at 160 campuses across the country.

Report contributor Julian Keniry, senior director of campus and communithy leaders for the NWF, says they learned it was difficult for many projects to get off the ground because of resistance from school administrators. And she notes that sustainability has yet to become a standard part of university curricula.

"If you're studying the health sciences, business, engineering, you're unlikely to graduate having taken any course on sustainability or environment."

Chris Devlin says Medaille College was able to save several cases of paper per month by getting some departments to switch to double-sided paper copiers. He says more trees could have been saved by using even less paper, if they could have gotten more department heads to go along with the idea.
