HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner y Jane Kaczmarek son algunas de las estrellas en la alfombra roja de anoche en Hollywood, pero las verdaderas estrellas fueron los niños. Cinco jóvenes de varias escuelas secundarias del área de Los Ángeles fueron honrados con un premio en el Hotel Beverly Hills durante la 19 ceremonia anual "Beat the Odds."

Edward Augustus con el Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños (Children's Defense Fund) dice que los estudiantes han sobrepasado tremendas adversidades en sus vidas personales y han comprobado que pueden ser una influencia positiva en sus comunidades.

"Estos cinco, gracias a su tenacidad, han descubierto la determinación para poder sobresalir. Desafortunadamente, muchos millones de niños en este país no tienen esas oportunidades."

El Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños comenzó su programa Beat the Odds en 1990 para celebrar el potencial positivo de la gente joven. Augustus refleja sobre el éxito de aquellos que han recibido las becas en el pasado.

"Se han ido a ejercer sus carreras profesionales, algunos son maestros, otros se han convertido ellos mismos en activistas sociales y se han convertido en modelos para la gente joven."

El premio que reciben consiste en una beca para la Universidad, una computadora laptop y servicios que asegurarán su éxito como estudiantes después de la secundaria. Desde su primer ceremonia Beat the Odds en Los Ángeles, el Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños ha entregado más de 350 becas a estudiantes en todo el país.
