Mortgage Scams in CT and How to Avoid Them

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Scam artists are going after Connecticut families who are desperate to save their homes from foreclosure. But these families are finding help from a new program that provides free counseling, aims to prevent scamming, and seeks to prosecute the scammers.

Last year, Patricia Hinds, West Haven, found herself dealing with a multitude of family crises at once and fell behind in her mortgage payments. She explains what happened next.

"I fall for the scam, big-time. I was duped by the infomercial I saw on the television and after listening to it, it sounded too good to be true. I guess it was too good to be true."

She was referred to the new HomeOwnership Center operated by Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven. There she learned that the three things she fell for are the three things scammers always do: guarantee they'll get your mortgage payments adjusted, demand money up front, and tell you to pay them instead of your lender. With help from the HomeOwnership Center, she was able to save her home.

Robert Kantor directs Fannie Mae in Connecticut. Fannie Mae is chartered by Congress to make mortgage money available to legitimate lenders at affordable rates. Kantor addressed a group of homeowners with a message about scammers.

"We have to prosecute these folks; it's critical. The only way we're going to be able to do it is if people like you in the communities who know people - or yourselves - who have been scammed, report it."

Scammers now operate in several languages, the better to hook more homeowners into their fraud.
