Immigration Reform Advocates Call for Arizona Business Ban

CHICAGO - Immigration reform advocates are pushing Chicago's City Council to pass a resolution that would impose economic sanctions on the State of Arizona for its controversial immigration law. Introduced to the city council on Wednesday, the resolution calls for limited city employee travel to Arizona as well as the rejection of business proposals with companies from the Grand Canyon State.

Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights, says the move would send a powerful message about the need for immigration reform.

"We want our democracy to be able to include all. There are eleven million people without legal status who desperately want to be able to learn English, become legal, earn their citizenship, and contribute fully to America."

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights recently launched the One Nation, One Dream initiative with Sen. Dick Durbin. The goal is to mobilize voters and highlight the need for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level.

"In the wake of the failed attempts to get immigration reform and the divisiveness that we have seen as a result of the Arizona law, we thought it was really important to make clear that immigrants want to be part of this one nation and that we all share the American dream."

On Thursday, members of the group demonstrated inside Chicago's City Hall. From there, they marched to the Chicago Cubs' offices, with 2,000 letters asking the club to move the team's Spring training location out of Arizona. They also asked the club to tell commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, to move the 2011 All-Star game out of Phoenix.
