NORWALK, Conn. - Summer break is wrapping up for Connecticut school kids, and public school students who participated in an award-winning summer learning program at two private schools in the state will be better prepared for the new school year.

The program brings low-income public school students from Bridgeport, Norwalk and Stamford to private schools in New Canaan and Greens Farms, five days a week for six weeks, at no cost to their families. Horizons National, based in Norwalk, oversees similar programs in ten states, according to CEO Lorna Smith. She believes among the reasons for its success is the long view it takes.

"It's a community of learners that lasts over time and involves students and siblings, and parents and families, and teachers and staff, who stay with the program year after year."

Children in the Horizons program are selected in Kindergarten and attend for many summers thereafter. The program won the 2010 Excellence in Summer Learning Award from the National Summer Learning Association. Smith says they accept youngsters with a whole range of abilities.

"We do not 'take' students from public schools and put them into private schools. Our goal is to return students to their public school classrooms, just better prepared, in the fall."

She notes the summer work also helps students avoid the so-called summer slide, when they could otherwise forget much of what they've learned during the previous school year.
