BILLINGS, Mont. - Boosting ranch profits and addressing the problem of monopolies in the meatpacking industry are issues drawing ranchers from around the state as they gather in Billings Friday for the Northern Plains Resource Council annual meeting. Council board member and rancher Jeanie Alderson says tips for a better bottom line will focus on tried-and-true methods, such as managing grasslands naturally and paying attention to Mother Nature in managing herds.

"We'll cover very practical things like when we calve and working with nature versus working it against us, and how that can save us money."

Dave Pratt of Ranch Management Consultants will provide in-depth strategies at the gathering.

On the ranching front, Alderson is interested in what Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock will say about efforts to level the playing field in the meatpacking industry so small producers are treated equally. It's a concern being addressed nationally, she adds, and ranchers can have a say.

"There's a Nov. 22 deadline for comments to the USDA on what's called the 'undue preference,' where large corporate feedlots receive preferential treatment."

Other topics at the conference include an examination of coal in the state's economy, and connections between environmental toxins and cancer. The conference runs through Saturday at the Crowne Plaza, Billings; registration opens at 11 a.m. Friday and the conference ends at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
