HELENA, Mont. - More than 100 grassroots organizations from Montana and around the country are pushing to get a food safety bill amendment from Sen. Jon Tester served up on the Senate's plate. Food safety legislation is expected to be debated soon. It requires extensive new paperwork to ensure safety checks are in place, and Tester is proposing that most small producers be exempted because they can't afford the regulations.

Judith McGeary with the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance points out that contamination problems in recent years had nothing to do with local jams and jellies, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

"This is the stuff people drive out to the farms for, the farmers markets, the local co-op -- the produce and fresh foods. A great deal of it would not be available under this bill."

McGeary agrees that food safety is a priority, but she says small food businesses are already covered by state and local standards, and don't need to be part of federal rules for industrial-scale production.

"What this bill will end up doing is depriving consumers of the option to buy truly healthy and safe foods at the local level."

The Food Safety Modernization Act is S. 510. Tester's amendment would screen the size of the food business and distribution points to measure whether the new federal rules should apply. The Northern Plains Resource Council also backs the amendment.
