Plans to End Childhood Hunger in NV by 2015

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Their ambitious goal is to end childhood hunger in Nevada and across the nation by 2015. Actor and anti-hunger advocate Jeff Bridges is hoping the No Kid Hungry Campaign will help accomplish that goal. Last week, Bridges and some governors and others interested in the cause kicked off the national effort.

Bridges says 17 million kids across the nation, including one in five children in Nevada, need reliable access to food. One of the solutions requires no extra funding, he points out.

"We need to make better use of the programs that are already in existence. That's what this new campaign I'm national chairperson of is all about: the No Kid Hungry Campaign."

The program keys on access to nutrition education and to existing federal programs such as SNAP (formerly food stamps) and the School Lunch and Breakfast programs, he explains. The plan was developed by Share Our Strength, an organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger.

Bridges says more than $1 billion is available to states, and it's not getting used.

Jocelyn Lantrip, communications director for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, says SNAP is a prime example.

"About $150 million out there in Nevada is available for foot stamps; there is a lot of money left on the table for people who qualify but haven't signed up for food stamps."

Nevada lawmakers recently changed the rules to allow Food Banks to interview hungry Nevadans and help them qualify for food assistance. She says the Food Bank of Northern Nevada ended its fiscal year in July and statistics show the number of needy Nevada families with children keeps rising.

"We served 153,000 people at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and 46 percent of them were children - that's more than 70,000 kids - and that's just northern Nevada."

Organizers say the No Kid Hungry Campaign is aimed at creating a public-private partnership that will close the gaps between existing food resources and the families who need them.
