Voter Registration Details for MT – City Council Elections Nov. 8

BILLINGS, Mont. - The Columbus Day holiday today means Montanans get one more day before the end of regular voter registration. It's one of several details for voters to keep in mind this year, with city and town council races coming up November 8.

Forty-seven communities are holding their municipal elections using mailed ballots only.

Theresa Keaveny, executive director of the Montana Conservation Voters Education Fund, says that, while the next presidential election is receiving a lot of media attention right now, these local races are important.

"City councils make important decisions about roads, public safety, how our communities grow, water protection, trails and the quality of life."

For those living in areas using mailed ballots, voters deemed "inactive" won't receive one. Keaveny says those communities also won't have polling places open on Election Day, so it's important for voters to take action to make sure they receive and cast ballots.

"So, if you've moved or if your voter registration is in question, re-register, or contact your county election office, or give our voter rights hot line a call at 406-581-8942."

Keaveny says after regular registration ends Tuesday, late registration is available. That means voters can register at county election offices, even on Election Day, and cast ballots.

Montanans wishing to register do need to show a government-issued identification.
