Christmas Bird Count Tip: Watch for Evening Grosbeaks

LAS VEGAS - The annual Christmas Bird Count gets under way today in Nevada, with folks headed out to a pair of locations statewide to chart species.

Citizen scientists will be counting birds in South Lake Tahoe and Fallon, according to Kathy Oakes, communications chair at Nevada's Lahontan Audubon Society. She says the annual count provides a valuable snapshot of trends in winter migrations.

"They're able to see species that are moving further north with our warming climate. They're looking at species whose numbers appear to be declining, from one count to the next."

This year, she says, bird counters will be looking to see whether evening grosbeaks are returning in large numbers to northern Nevada.

Collected information is compiled worldwide, says Amy Cilimburg, director of bird conservation at Montana Audubon, with data in recent years showing that many birds are shifting their range to follow changes in temperatures linked to climate change.

"Once we have some ideas about these trends, we can start to see what are the changes - whether it's our climate, our habitat, or to people. We can start to see what the impact is on birds and help look for solutions for all of us."

Oakes says there's a lot of interest in whether one type of bird has returned to the state.

"Evening grosbeaks are a species that used to be a pretty common wintering bird, but then for almost 20 years or more their numbers have been declining. But last year there was a huge number of evening grosbeaks counted throughout northern Nevada."

Beginners and expert birders are invited to attend the counts, which continue Saturday in Elko and Truckee Meadows, Sunday in Carson City and at Pyramid Lake, and Jan. 1 in Minden.

The Christmas Bird Count is the world's longest-running citizen science project.
