ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The word lists are being polished up in preparation for the AARP National Spelling Bee in Cheyenne, Wyoming, this weekend. Spellers from all over the nation have already signed up, and anyone age 50 and older is welcome to compete.

Jennifer Brock of Allentown, Pennsylvania, is one of this year's contestants. She won the Lehigh Valley Senior Spelling Bee last year, without even putting her nose in a dictionary.

"No, I don't study. I've always been a terrific reader and interested in language, so I've absorbed a lot of words."

Brock says the spellers at the AARP Bee are world-class, so she knows the competition will be tough.

"I'd like to make it to the stage, and I'd like to not be sent away after the first round of words."

AARP Wyoming members created the national spelling bee to encourage peers to keep their minds sharp, and to celebrate a lifetime of learning. The Bee will be online at aarp.org.

Registration for the Bee Friday and Saturday can be done online at aarp.org for $40 in advance, or register at the door for $50. Top prize is $1000.

All words for the Bee come from Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition.
