Illinois families get NORAD help finding Santa

CHICAGO - Illinois children who say they don't believe in Santa might just want to check in with the North American Aerospace Defense Command. NORAD is responsible for keeping the airspace safe in North America, and every Christmas Eve, its radar spots Santa racing around the world, dropping off tons of gifts.

NORAD Tech Sergeant Thomas Doscher says it began more than 50 years ago when a child misdialed a Santa hotline and reached division commander Colonel Henry Shoup, who ordered his staff to track Santa. Sgt. Doscher tells the children that they've learned a lot about Santa over the years, like how he gets all those presents delivered in one night.

"NORAD intelligence reports indicate that Santa doesn't experience time the way we do. Santa somehow functions within his own space-time continuum."

Sgt. Doscher says Santa usually begins his rounds in the Eastern hemisphere, and when he arrives in North America, NORAD's fighter jets intercept him to wish him a safe journey. He says Santa should be arriving in Illinois sometime after nine tonight. Anyone who wants to find out just where Santa is can call 877-HI-NORAD and get a live update.

The sergeant says preparations are already in place for the intercept over North America. And he has some advice for the children in Illinois.

"You should definitely be in bed by nine o'clock because our intelligence says that's when Santa usually shows up at people's houses, between nine and midnight usually."

NORAD added a link to its website this year for Illinoisans looking for ways to offer support to those serving overseas. And for children whose military parents won't be making it home for the holidays, Sergeant Doscher, who has been deployed himself, offers this assurance.

"When you deploy over Christmas you look forward to that visit from Santa Claus. So, if there's a child out there who's wondering 'Is Santa going to visit my mom or dad?,' the answer is pretty much guaranteed 'yes.'"

Sergeant Doscher says every year, more than 1200 uniformed personnel and civilians volunteer their time to answer thousands of phone calls and emails that pour in from around the world on Christmas Eve.

Children can talk to a live Santa tracker by calling 877-HI-NORAD or get more information at www.noradsanta.org.
