Lawsuit Filed to Stop Delta Plan

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A coalition of fishing, farming and environmental groups is filing a lawsuit to stop the state's plan to manage the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The goal of the "Delta Plan" is to provide more water to cities and farms, while also restoring the ecosystem of the Delta.

However, according to the opposing groups, the plan fails to fix the Delta or the water supply problem. Bob Wright, senior council for Friends of the River, said the plan would be the "final nail in the coffin" for several species of endangered fish, such as salmon.

"They basically need the flows and they need the fresh water to migrate upstream and get to where they spawn," he said. "And, the big thing about extinction is, it's forever."

The lawsuit seeks to set aside the approval of the plan, including the construction of Governor Jerry Brown's proposed twin water tunnels. The tunnels would siphon fresh water from the Sacramento River, around the Delta and to the Southland, the Greater Los Angeles area.

Wright declared that the tunnels would be a huge mistake. He said California voters struck down a similar plan to build peripheral canals more than 30 years ago.

"People of the state voted on it in a referendum in June of 1982 and defeated it by a 2:1 margin," he recalled. "And now, same governor, same plan, and it's back."

The coalition's lawsuit is the fourth one to be filed against the Delta Plan in recent weeks.
